Are Your Shoes Ready to Cruise?

Posted on July 22 2015

If you are one of the 10 million people embarking on the open seas from an American port this year on a cruise, your suitcase might be bursting with all sorts of outfits to don for the plethora of activities offered.

In addition to sunscreen, cameras, and sunglasses, you’ll need to be prepared with proper footwear to go along with different dress code categories you may encounter. View our suggestions from casual wear all the way to black-tie events.

Shoes to Help You Cruise

Winter is a prime season to go on a cruise. But just because you may be headed to a Caribbean destination in winter does not mean you can wear your bathing suit wherever you please on the cruise ship. While very casual wear is usually reserved for poolside, the fitness deck, excursions, or other hang-out spots on board, your particular cruise requires a certain dress code beyond the pool. Cruisers typically encounter three styles of dress codes:

  • Cruise casual dress
  • Country club or elegant casual
  • Formal attire

Cruise Casual Dress

Cruise casual is acceptable for the majority of time spent on board cruises and includes summer and casual dresses, skirts, regular or capri pants, shorts, jeans and tops for women, and khakis, jeans, shorts and casual shirts for men.

You’ll want footwear that is comfortable, especially if you plan on doing a fair bit of exploring on the ship or during excursions. However, just because you’re wearing casual attire doesn’t mean you have to forgo fashion.

SRI’s Olukai Women's Kumu W Sandal’s metallic shine adds a touch of class to elevate a casual flip flop. For men, Sperry’s Top-sider Men's Billfish Boat Shoes are made with 100% leather and a rubber sole, perfect for the avid explorer.

Country Club or Elegant Casual Dress

Country club casual or elegant resort wear is appropriate dress for most evening events on a cruise. This particular style is comprised of dresses, skirts or non-denim pants with blouses for women, and slacks and collared or button-down shirts for men. Sports coats are optional but can elevate an outfit.

BCBGeneration Women's Topaz Pump go with all sorts of elegant casual wear, such as sundresses or resort-style jumpsuit/rompers. Men will appreciate the stylish, unique woven leather detail in the Strafford Woven Dress Shoe by Nunn Bush.

Formal Attire

Formal attire is usually reserved for 1-3 nights on a cruise for special occasions. Women wear cocktail dresses, evening gowns, and pantsuits, while men sport tuxedos, dinner jackets, or dark suits.

The Carlette Dress Pump from Jessica Simpson provides a delicate ankle strap and a 4” heel with memory foam midsole to keep feet looking stylish and feeling comfortable. A fully-cushioned footbed in the Lexington Cap Toe Oxford from Florsheim also add comfort to a classy ensemble.
