When people think of comfortable shoes, most people think Dr. Scholl’s. Known for their incredibly cushy insoles, this footwear is able to help alleviate a number of foot conditions and lower body pain.
But how did this company originate and grow to become a household name? Read on to learn more.
Who is Dr. Scholl?
William Mathias Scholl was born in 1882 in Indiana and was one of 13 children. From a young age he was exposed to the makings of shoes as his grandfather was both a cobbler and a farmer.
As a child, Scholl borrowed his grandfather’s cobbler tools to fix shoes so he could earn a little extra cash. In 1922, Scholl graduated from Chicago Medical School. He practiced medicine until 1946 when he began to focus more on his shoe business.
When did Dr. Scholl’s shoes become famous?
Dr. Scholl’s was founded in 1904, shortly after the doctor himself invented and patented his first product: a basic arch support. His company didn’t become a household name, however, until the 1960’s when he created a simple wood sandal with a colorful strap that was inspired by a vintage clog he found whilst on a trip.
Throughout his life he created more than 1,000 foot aids solidifying his name as one of the top influencers in the world of footwear.
How can Dr. Scholl’s footwear help me?
